2. CAS Questionnaire

Why ...

At Atlantic College, we consider the Service and Activities programme to be an integral part of every student's experience and essential to what we want them to gain from being here, and we expect every student to be widely involved.

As part of this programme, students have to complete a CAS questionnaire at three times: near the end of their first year, at the end of August Period, and near the end of their second year. There are three main purposes:

  • Since participation in the CAS programme is also an IB requirement, schools must provide evidence of this.
  • Even when someone is very involved, we feel it is helpful to them to occasionally reflect on what they have been doing.
  • The questionnaire also gives students a chance to give some feedback, including critical feedback, on the programme.
Some additional thoughts that may be of help in completing this self-evaluation (DB):
  • Service is as much about gaining personally as it is about giving, and giving need not have to be done immediately -- it could come later (and even away from the College.)
  • Service should also mean a change in attitude and should be lasting if it is to be of any real value.
  • Involvement in the Service/Activities programme would have had its successes and failures -- it is important to attempt to analyse the reasons for both.
  • Involvement in activities outside the formal programme of Service, Activities and Project Periods may have made demands on your time -- have they been worth the effort?
  • Honest responses will help, not only the individual, but also all those responsible for the organisation of the programme and should, therefore, lead to improvements.
  • Your answers to the questions in this self-evaluation will be kept confidential within the College (available only to Heads of Service, tutors and Houseparents,) but some samples may have to be submitted to the IB.
How to ...

In the past, printed questionnaires have been handed out to students, but as an attempt to make the process less wasteful and easier, an attempt is being made, this year for the first time, to have all students complete the questionnaire on-line. This should now be quite simple.

  1. To log in, go to the Internal area of this website. You will be asked to log in, using your Internet ID (e.g. your last name or s.th. like 'ac02flas') and the 8-character password that you use to log on to the Internet on the College network. (This password should be known only to you.)

(The first time you enter this area you will be asked for your first and last name.)

  2. After clicking on your year at College, 1st or 2nd, and on your Service, you can then get a form. This will have your name already entered at the top. If the form is not for your Service and your year at College, then please do not press 'Save', but either log out or return to the main page. Thank you.
  3. You can then start to complete the form. The maximum length of each response is about 1000 characters (-- needless to say, there is no need to even get close to that length.)
  4. Please 'Save' your responses every ten minutes, and do not forget to 'Save' when you have finished. Otherwise your responses will not be stored on the Server and be lost!
  5. There is no need to complete the questionnaire in one session: the next time you return to this form, your previous responses will be shown again and you can continue to work on them.

... and start
